The first broadcast of AeschTunes Revisited went off pretty well yesterday. I thought I'd make a quick post here and run off a list of what was played and some brief notes on the tracks.
1. La Bouche - "In Your Life [Original Extended Mix]"
For months, this was the only version of the original recording that could be acquired. I think I actually like it better than the original radio version, as it builds a little better.
2. a-ha - "Take On Me [Extended Version]"
The intro on this mix is really cool. This track alone makes the first Retro:Active Rare & Remixed compilation worth tracking down, not to mention other great mixes too.
3. George Michael - "Amazing [Full Intention Club Mix]"
A dancier version of the current AeschTunes hit "Amazing".
4. Duran Duran - "(Reach Up For The) Sunrise [Live]"
From the live DVD that accompanied the limited edition pressing of the Astronaut album. The intro is a little quiet (and lengthy), but it's a good, rockier version of the song.
5. Rename - "Maybe Later I Will Fall [Extended Version]"
A good extended mix, though I know I'm just barely not recognizing a sample in there!
6. Erasure - "You Surround Me [Remix]"
This was our "Classic Pick of the Week" for the first edition of AeschTunes Revisited. An uptempo dance mix of what's normally a lower midtempo ballad. One of Mark Saunders' best remixes, if you ask me.
7. Ian van Dahl - "Where Are You Now? [Unplugged]"
Another song currently on the chart, this acoustic version is notable for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Ian van Dahl is a group known for their electronic/trance oriented material and not typically for their use of "traditional" instruments. Secondly, rather than turning the song into a ballad (which frequently happens with acoustic versions), they kept the tempo (and energy) of the track up. *THE* highlight of the "Where Are You Now?" single.
8. Green Day - "Longview [Live]"
Coming from the "Basket Case" European single. Sound quality could be a little better, but hearing the crowd singing along is nice. And not sure what happened in the middle of the song, but there's a couple of lines that are missing in the bridge...
9. Perpetuous Dreamer - "The Sound Of Goodbye [Above And Beyond Club Mix]"
A really nice trancey track from about two years ago, this is a longer club version.
10. The Beatles - "Twist And Shout [Live]"
Yes, you read that right. I said in the initial announcement about this show that we'd pull in pre-chart material, and this happens to be one of the oldest tracks in the Revisited library. While the actual performance of the song isn't notably different, John Lennon's banter with the crowd (the band was performing before English royalty and notables in addition to some of the more middle-class fans) is hysterical. The additional music at the end of the track appears to be the bed music from the television broadcast this was taken from for the Anthology CD series.
11. Depeche Mode - "Enjoy The Silence [Ewan Pearson Remix]"
One of the many tracks that were made available as digital downloads only (a radio edit appears on the UK singles, and a longer version on the US & UK singles of "Enjoy The Silence '04"), this is one of the better remixes done for the new issue of "Enjoy The Silence".
We haven't programmed our second issue of the show yet, so we don't know what kind of surprises will be in store, but we'd like to solicit a little input...
What are some songs that YOU would like to see us use as the "Classic Pick of the Week", or just on the show in general? We can't guarantee that we'll use all suggestions, as we actually have to have a copy of the track first in order to use it. But we want to hear what our listeners like in the way of remixes, live recordings, alternate versions of songs.
